L’Amateur de Cigare English edition #13 is online
Summary
Editorial
To paraphrase André Malraux—who glibly summarized the economic nature of cinema in the final lines of a book on the film industry—“cigars are a business.” Unlike cinema, cigars are unfortunately not elevated to the level of a major art form but this small cylinder of tobacco truly is at once a craft, where everything is still done by hand, and an industry that generates billions of dollars every year.
Cover story
Known as much—if not more—for his brilliant comic turns on the tennis court as for his fine record, the Franco-Iranian player Mansour Bahrami was introduced to cigars by Henri Leconte over 30 years ago. Though unobtrusive on the political scene for many years, he now speaks out in support of the spirit of rebellion at work in Iran.
The STG Empire
While the cigar world’s historical capital is obviously Havana, and while almost half of global production is now concentrated in Estelí, a small town in Nicaragua (see ADC English edition #12), the economic capital is undoubtedly Copenhagen, where the STG (Scandinavian Tobacco Group) is headquartered. The group claims to be the world leader in the sector and, since Niels Frederiksen became CEO, it has been making more and more acquisitions to consolidate its position.
